I don't think Doyle intended Watson to be as dopey and dolt-ish as Bruce plays him. Certainly Edward Hardwicke, Jude Law, and Martin Freeman all make him assertive and able to put Holmes in his place at times, not just hero-worshippy and dopey. There is a bit more of the hero-worship with David Burke (the first Watson of the Brett series, though.)
To be fair, the original Watson of the stories can be very submissive, even referring to Holmes as his "master," but he certainly takes charge when Holmes' health is at stake.
